Kiln-Dried Firewood Dimensions & Best Practices

Full- and Half-Size DIMENSIONS

One issue with buying firewood is measuring quantity so you can make comparisons. The "cord" is one unit of measurement and measures 4' x 4' x 8'.  A lot of firewood dealers find this measurement impractical because almost no one burns 4 foot logs and firewood racks and stoves are typically made for 16-20 inch logs. Thus, a lot of firewood dealers sell by smaller, more convenient quantities or fractions of cords.

We offer customers two choices: Full-Size and Half-Size. Our kiln dried firewood is typically 16 inches long and is stacked neatly and compact when delivered.

Our Full-Size is 4' x 8'x 16" or approximately 1/3 cord. Our Half-Size is 4' x 4' x 16" or approximately 1/6 cord. See detailed pictures below.

Proper Storage

Once kiln dried firewood is delivered, it should be stored in a dry area with adequate ventilation. If outside, keep the top of the pile covered to keep off the rain/snow, but do not cover the sides (want air flow). It is recommended that you do not store the wood directly on the ground as the wood will absorb moisture and mold will set in.  Keeping the wood dry with good air flow is very important while storing.

Starting a Fire

Over the years, we have found this to be a tried and true method for starting a fire.

  1. Open up sheets of newspaper and then crumple them into ‘loose balls’ and then place these ‘loose balls’ into a small pile. We use the term ‘loose balls’ so that you leave some air space in each crumpled ball as a fire needs oxygen to burn.

  2. Add some kindling in a ‘teepee’ like fashion over the pile of crumpled up newspaper balls.

  3. Light the newspaper and let the kindling catch fire.

  4. Next add your kiln dried logs in a similar teepee fashion, starting with smaller logs first

  5. Continue to add kiln dried logs as needed and poke the fire when necessary to create air spaces.

Now sit back and enjoy your Toasty Toes!
